Maniac (USA) + Suspect Parts (USA/GER/GB)

Maniac (Los Angeles / USA)

Konzert am Samstag, 5. September 2015 in Lucky’s Luke

Maniac were formed in Los Angeles, California in 2012. Zache Davis moved to L.A. via Seattle where he played in bands like The Girls and The Cute Lepers. After injuring himself in a serious bicycle accident in L.A., he became a drug dealer to pay his extensive medical bills. Andrew Zappin, an L.A. transplant from Dayton, Ohio had never played in a band before but honed his lead guitar chops for years playing along to Cheap Trick records. Davis and Zappin befriended each other out of a mutual love for music and Latin women and would often find themselves carousing in the seamy underbelly of L.A. night life.

Along with music video director Ardy Fatehi (who played in Portland, Oregon punk band Goons of Destruction), they formed the band Maniac, recruiting Richie Cardenas of Clorox Girls, Rough Kids and Neighborhood Brats on the drums.

When Ardy Fatehi was forced to work on location in another city, Davis and company decided to ask Justin Maurer of Clorox Girls and L.A. Drugz to fill in on guitar. This fill-in job became a permanent one, and Maurer began to contribute to song writing and arrangement duties. After recording their first single for Canadian independent label La Ti Da Records (Dim Sum EP), Richie Cardenas left the group to go back to school while also working full time for the US Postal Service. To bring the band incest full circle, they brought in James Carman of Images and L.A. Drugz to play drums.

Bringing together their varied gazpacho of musical influences, the Maniac sound is lean and angular with sonic walls of power chords, biting leads and catchy vocal delivery. Carman slams into his drums with youthful exuberance and sets the pace for Davis‘ chunky bass guitar, Maurer’s machine-gun rhythm guitar and Zappin’s masterful lead guitar chops.

Maniac’s lyrics come mainly from Davis‘ comic yet dark sense of humor, drawing from both personal experience and a distinct passion for French poetry and literature. His themes range from sexual frustration to internal turmoil. Like L.A. songsmith Easy E., Davis has since quit his drug dealing profession to focus on music and to pursue a Bachelor’s Degree at UCLA.

Maniac are a quintessentially L.A. band in that they love both punk rock and classic rock and bring to a table a deep understanding of the city they live in and the music they play. Maniac were finalists in LA Weekly’s „Best Live Band in LA“ awards category.

In the fall of 2013, they recorded their debut album at Station House Studios in the Echo Park neighborhood of Los Angeles with Mark Rains manning the knobs as engineer. Daniel Hadji Husayn of Red Dons performed mastering duties at his North London Bomb Factory mastering house.

Maniac’s debut LP, „Demimonde“ will be released in November 2014 on La Ti Da Records.

Suspect Parts (Los Angeles, München, Manchester)

Apocalypse Pop, waiting for the apocalypse to…drop. ….

Suspect Parts are the brainchild of three exiled Americans and one Brit who managed to tame their inner demons with buzzsaw punk/power pop, a candy floss meets razorblade concoction that goes down surprisingly smooth.

Ex and current members of bands like Thee Spivs, The Briefs, Clorox Girls, Ripchord, Metric Eyes, LA Drugz and Red Dons; they are Suspect, they come from Suspect Parts, but these four maniacs together constitute the makeup of the apocalypse pop movement. …. Combining 60’s pop and bubblegum with late 70’s California beach punk, Suspect Parts have something brewing that can’t be ignored. The Seeds, the Kinks, Wire, and the Buzzcocks can be heard, as well as a little Nuggets, a little Star Spangles or Rezillos, a little Protex or Undertones, but with a modern touch. Backward looking but forward thinking indie pop with a punk edge. …. Suspect Parts have released four 7″ singles worldwide on indie labels like Deranged (Fucked Up, Tranzmitors), No Front Teeth (Cute Lepers, Disco Lepers), Taken By Surprise (Observers, The Cribs), Hovercraft (Cafeteria Dance Fever, Poison Idea), and House Party (Statues, Yeah Yeah Yeahs.) …. A cassette tape of all 4 singles was also released on Seattle’s GGNZLA label.

Apocalypse Pop. MGMT or Ramones? Kings of Leon or New York Dolls? When oil runs out a major line is going to be drawn. Which side are you on? Which tribe are you willing to die for? …. Pop’s chosen warriors will rule the apocalypse. …. Drop, waiting for the apocalypse to…pop.

The Hirsch Effekt + Choking on Illusions + Awake the Mutes

2015-08 The Hirsch Effekt

The Hirsch Effekt (H)

Konzert am 14. August 2015 in Lucky’s Luke

Choking on Illusions (SB/KL)

Based in Saarbrücken, South-West Germany, Choking on Illusions tries to create its own conception of modern hardcore –apart from the mass, autonomous, passionate and dynamic. While maintining a strong love and passion for alternative music, shown through countless events and concerts organized by members from the band, Choking on Illusions has been able to establish its name amongst a superior and growing pool of the hardcore scene. Since the foundation in late 2008 and a major change in the preceding line-up in 2010, the band found its solid cast in the spring of 2011: Choking on Illusions is Mario Strasser (Vocals), Jannik Aulenbacher (Guitar), Maciej Spiczak (Guitar), Christian Pontes (Bass) and Dustin Ueckert (Drums). Since then, the band retrospects on more than 110 live shows in the past 24 months, including 3 tours with The Green River Burial (Ger), Wasted Bullet (NL) and Chronographs (UK). Amongst others, Choking on Illusions shared the stage with bands such as Stick to your Guns, Comeback Kid, Terror, Evergreen Terrace, Hundredth, Counterparts or La Dispute in cities such as Munich, Berlin, Strasbourg, Luxembourg, Salzburg or Vienna.

Choking on Illusions

Choking on Illusions

To date, the band released a self-titled EP in 2008, a 2 song demo in 2010, the debut album “Guide me home” in summer 2012 and the free-download EP “Revive” in late 2012. Choking on Illusions recently entered Mysterium Studio once again to complete the recordings for the follow-up album to “Guide me home” to be released end 2013/beginning 2014. Up to date, the album represents a pioneering and future-oriented sonic output of the band, along with elaborated release concept for the album. At present, Choking on Illusions nevertheless does not hesitate to play shows and tours everywhere possible –and never to leave without a message, one of the major band policies.
